Local road improvements
I am pleased to see that a number of roads in our area are scheduled to be resurfaced. Princes Street in Metheringham is being resurfaced as I write this update with others to take place in the coming weeks including Timberland Drove works from 20th August to 15th September and Dunston Heath Lane works from 21 August to 2nd September.
In all cases diversions will be signed and residents in affected roads will received letters giving them information. I have been pressing for these roads to be improved in several cases even bringing the county boss of highways to look at them.
In the summertime
Now we are in the summer holidays there are lots of activities taking place across the county including big events such as jousting at Lincoln Castle, children’s activities in a number of Libraries and much more. More information is on websites such as lincolncastle.com and the main county council website (put your choice into search).
Talking about Lincoln Castle recent concerts had headline acts which included Crowded House, Jess Glynne, Paloma Faith, Kaiser Chiefs, Madness and Gregory Porter.
Promoters Cuffe & Taylor, came to Lincoln this June to put on their first ever summer show series in the city’s iconic castle. The intimate setting of the castle wowed fans and artists alike, who were in awe of the magnificent, historic backdrop.
The shows at Lincoln Castle have drawn visitors from far and wide. This was particularly noted at the Gregory Porter concert with fans travelling from as far away as America just to watch his performance at the castle.
There were positive effects on local businesses and the hospitality trade too. The tourism boost to Lincoln was felt across the whole city with hotels and accommodation reporting increased bookings and restaurants and bars benefiting from the increased footfall as well as the positive impact on other local attractions, retail and shopping.
The success of the concerts is further mirrored by audience members who have enthused that the shows have put Lincoln on the gig map. There was much praise for the addition of a BSL signer at every show, making the concerts accessible for everyone. My sources tell me that there will be more big names next year.
As I have mentioned before tourism is big in the county. Latest figures I have seen show an estimated £2.9 billion benefit to the county.
First graduates from Lincoln Medical School
It was great to see the first students pass through the Medical School. This is a major development, and the students will continue their training in and around the county. It is to be hoped that the students who report enjoying studying in the county will stay and work here.
I wish everyone an enjoyable summer.
